i woke up not hungry. went to uni not hungry. came home not hungry. then it was 9:30pm at night, haven't had a meal in the day, and i was feeling slightly hungry...and taco commercial was on tv.......when you live almost alone, you sometimes have to cook....
so i went shopping.

1 box of taco kit + 600g of mince beef (which i couldn't find, so got 1kg) + 1 iceburg lettuce + 2 onions + 3 tomatoes + 1 avocado = $23.

Scrape 1/2 avocado out into bowl. Clean some lettuce leaves. Get tomato. Peel onion. Sharpen knife. Ready to dice.

Chop lettuce. Dice tomatoes and add seasoning (since both are added to frying pan at same time). Get 500g mince beef (1/2 what i bought). Dice onions and mix with mince....

...but after cooking for 2 minutes, the mince did what mince do (break into smaller pieces), and i felt stupid for mixing it with the onions beforehand. Wouldn't have made a difference if i put them in the pan seperately. Anyways, cook cook cook...

Add tomatoes and seasoning and water. Simmer simmer simmer...and now, for the taco shells.

Oven. Heat. Shells go in~

~shells come out. (5, since 1 kit-box has 10, and i used 1/2 kg of mince).
and after some fine-tuning,

wallah! Small green bowl is mashed avocado. Small red is the taco sauce (which i think tastes exactly the same as dorito dipping sauces). And i'm ready to eat.

Pack. Eat. (looks kind of small doesn't it..) (and i realised i forgot to buy grated cheese. So i checked the fridge, and i had NO cheese. So i ate without cheese)
....and the conclusion....
- if the pack says use 600g mince for the 10 servings....use 600g, not 1kg.
- 500g of mince beef is a lot. Mix it with onion, tomato, lettuce, sauce, avocado, and it becomes too much (for 1 meal).
- They don't show you the biting part on commercials for a reason. The shell cracks and you get hot mince-sauce all over your hands. (Am i supposed to wait for it to cool down?)
- If you're going to eat it in your hands...why did they make the shell-bottoms flat.?
- 5 servings with overloaded beef is too much. (i only ate 3, and now i'm full and feeling sick)
- packing cooked crisp shells with as much ingredients as possible without cracking it is very hard and not as fun as the commercial makes it out to be.
- Buy cheese. (although i don't think it'd have made any difference.)
- the camera on my phone sucks.
now i have 2 cooked servings left, and 1/2 the ingredients uncooked... hope i'm hungry tomorrow. |
